Avatar film review and trailer
14 January 2010
FOR sheer spectacle alone, the release of Avatar has presented the cinema- going world with an unsurpassable feat in movie making.
At once both thrilling and awe-inspiring there can be no question as to whether or not this is James Cameron’s opus and a project the scale of which he will be hard measured to surpass for the rest of his career.
The ONLY way to see this film is in 3D. The alien world of Pandora featured throughout (existing entirely on a digital level) is rife with lush ethereal botany and savage, colourful fauna – all of which seem to either creep up on, float past or pounce at you throughout.
On a sensory level, many have said already that this is the closest opportunity we will have to experiencing life on another world, making this, quite simply, in the blockbuster movie world, a true ‘game changer’.
Trying to surpass a film like Titanic in scale, however, inevitably leads to some of the weaker parts of the narrative being neglected.
The plot surrounding America’s foray into mining and colonisation in the distant future on other planets, which ultimately spells doom for the natives or Na’vi, seems to be a thinly-veiled allegory for the conflict in the Middle East at times. At other points it seems the film is deliberately comparing the aliens’ plight to that of native American Indians, the tribe culture of which does share many similarities to portrayals from several earlier westerns, a kind of Spartacus meets Dances With Wolves in space.
Clumsy metaphors and well meaning environmental forewarnings aside, Avatar is an exciting, well-realised and totally atmospheric epic which you become fully immersed within from the get-go, thanks (in part) to some solid performances from leading man Sam Worthington and in particular, the villains of the piece played by Stephen Lang and Giovanni Ribisi.
More importantly you will most likely never have seen a film so luscious and rich in depth of field before this, meaning anyone who loves film should see this at once…and then go and see it again straight away.
