Adcote School (Shropshire)

Adcote School for Girls (4-18 years) is a unique, vibrant, independent school, near Shrewsbury. It is arguably one of the finest looking schools in Shropshire. The Grade 1 listed building is approached by a magnificent sweeping drive, which cuts through swathes of corn, reminding us just how rural and beautiful this county is.

Despite its imposing exterior, Adcote School is proud of its welcoming, friendly and unpretentious reputation. The school’s size means that the children, staff and parents really get to know each other. There is a tangible sense of community, creating a warm and enabling atmosphere.

Adcote is the only purely girls independent school, from 4-18 years in Shropshire. Single sex schools have not only proved to be successful in achieving high examination grades; they provide the girls and young ladies with opportunities for leadership, to participate at a greater level without feeling inhibited. Adcote School proves to be no exception to this.

The school’s rich history began in 1907, and the school moved to Adcote in 1927. Adcote was originally a country house built for the Darby family and designed by the famous architect Norman Shaw. The 27 acres of beautifully landscaped parkland surrounding the school cannot be underestimated, not only as wonderful recreational space, with tennis and netball courts and a forest school site but also as a reminder of the school’s life story. The stunning location provides an incredibly safe, secure and incredibly idyllic backdrop to this historic school.  The School’s Montessori nursery ‘Happy Faces’ is hugely successful, with a wide catchment area, it provides a seamless transition from nursery through to 18.

Experienced and dedicated teaching professionals are the essence of Adcote’s success. Small class sizes make individual attention a reality.  Specialist learning support is always available and similarly, expertise in challenging the gifted and talented pupils ensures that all the girls fulfil and exceed their potential in at least one field of study.  The two large computer suites and integrated Information Technology in classrooms provide the girls with the knowledge and skills to expand their understanding and explore twenty first century technology.

Perhaps Adcote’s greatest achievement is the variety and breadth of education that it offers its pupils. Both day girls and boarders benefit from first-rate tuition in tennis, horse riding and swimming as well as plenty of healthy competition with local schools in team sports including netball and hockey. The school has an exceptionally successful gymnastics team, its own dance company, an outstanding choir and even a dedicated gardening club.  Art and drama are equally strong, the school recently entertained family and friends with their production of 'A Midsummer Night's Dream', in the beautiful school grounds.

Independent School Inspectors reported that the school ‘Fully achieves its aims to deliver successful educational achievements through good teaching, leading to pupils meeting and generally exceeding individual academic expectations.’ Adcote pupils were ‘articulate, polite and their behaviour is exceptionally good'. They also found that ‘Pupils' respect for others and their interest and care for each other are of a high order.’  This is testament to the superb pastoral care and of the overriding ethos of the school:  respect, courtesy, good manners and kindness are actively encouraged. The girls’ achievements, whatever their nature, are highly regarded, allowing the girls to develop a sense of their own significance and pride.

Adcote School provides superb value for money, termly fees are inclusive and bursaries are available.  If, as a parent, you are looking for a school which delivers ‘traditional excellence’ in every sense of the word, then Adcote School is your answer.
